What is Therapeutic Arts? It's commonly called Art Therapy, Creative Therapy or Expressive Therapy. In my practice, I use the term 'therapeutic arts' because our focus can be on a variety of arts practices (creating something) or on the therapeutic relationship (wellbeing and support). Often, it overlaps. You can use a variety of ways to explore your lived experience, emotions and behaviours, depending on what you're comfortable with. From hand building or poetry to drawing or photography, I will supports your interests. What kinds of creative work can we do? It depends on your interests and what you're comfortable with. The options include traditional art materials, clay, basic printmaking, body and voice work, writing, digital media, photography, walking and talking, sand tray, sculpture, assemblage, craft. Suggestions are welcome, especially if you have your own interests. We can also use found objects and materials from nature. Nature walks or 'tinkering in the shed' are also options. |
What if I’m not creative - can I still try this out? For sure! There are no art rules and you're not expected to be a creative 'type'. It's about exploring your experience and having the opportunity to express yourself. Trying a new way of creative expression can reward us with new learning. We can be guided by your choices, regardless of your background and whether you consider yourself 'creative' or not. The focus is on the process rather than outcome. Where can we work? Services are available online or face to face in the Bega Valley, NSW. Bookings can be made in Cobargo, Bega, and Merimbula, depending on venue availability. It is even possible to work over the phone, although we need to adapt a little more! You may choose to have any kind of materials with you for your online session. You may also choose to play with sound, body movement or found objects, so don't worry if there aren't any 'art' materials on hand. If you have a smart phone or device that can accept video calls, you can be anywhere in the world. Ideally, your virtual session would be in a place that's reasonably private and comfortable for you. |
Who might use creative therapy and why? This is for you if you want to explore life experience/s or to focus on your wellbeing. Consider it 'creative counselling'. This is also for you if you want to begin or resume a creative practice. You may want mentorship to get started or overcome that creative block. Using therapeutic arts to explore lived experience can open up different perspectives, reduce stress and anxiety. It’s suitable for all ages, abilities and interests. Do you accept referrals? Yes, referrals can be made by anyone as long as permission has been given. For individuals, a phone call or contact form message can get us started. For services and other professionals, a referral form can be requested from me. Do you do Mental Health Care Plans? Unfortunately, no. I do work with NDIS participants who have counselling, therapeutic supports, and wellbeing as goals in their NDIS plans, however. If you have private health insurance, please consult your provider about types of therapy or counselling allowable under 'Allied Health Care Services'. |
